According to Bloomberg News, US President Donald Trump directed the US Trade Representative on the 5th to consider additional tariffs of $100 billion on Chinese goods。Earlier, the Trump administration said it would be willing to negotiate。
In a statement issued by the White House, Trump said: "In light of China's unfair retaliation, I have directed the United States Trade Representative (USTR) to consider whether there are $100 billion in additional tariffs under Section 301 and, if so, to identify products for which such tariffs would be imposed.。”
U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer issued a statement on the 5th, saying that considering China's unfair practices in technology transfer, intellectual property and innovation, the Office of the United States Trade Representative supports the additional measures under the provisions of Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974。
Here is the full text of Trump's statement released by the White House:
Following a thorough investigation under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, the United States Trade Representative (USTR) determined that China has repeatedly engaged in unfair access to U.S. intellectual property。
The practices detailed in the USTR investigation drew worldwide attention。China's illegal trade practices - ignored by Washington for years - have destroyed thousands of American factories and millions of American jobs。
On April 3, 2018, the United States Trade Representative announced tariffs on approximately $50 billion of imports from China as an initial means of eliminating the policies and practices identified in the investigation。Instead of correcting its misconduct, China has chosen to hurt our farmers and manufacturers。
In light of China's unfair retaliation, I have directed the United States Trade Representative to consider whether an additional $100 billion in tariffs under Section 301 is appropriate and, if so, to identify the products to be subject to those tariffs。I have also directed the Secretary of Agriculture, with the support of other members of my Cabinet, to use his broad authority to implement a plan to protect our farmers and agricultural interests。
Despite these actions, the United States remains prepared to engage in discussions to further support our commitment to free, fair, and reciprocal trade and to protect the technology and intellectual property of American companies and the American people。Trade barriers must be removed to promote economic growth in the United States and around the world。
I am committed to enabling American companies and workers to compete on a level playing field globally, and I will never allow unfair trade practices to harm American interests。
